Love Spell by Mia Kerick

Please Note: The following review is suitable for adults only.

Love Spell by Mia Kerick

QUILTBAG Content: Well, Love Spell offers us (first and foremost) a gender-fluid young gay man who thinks "Gender Labels Suck Donkey Balls." He’s out (other kids call him girly-boy), he’s proud (a self-professed queen), and he’s infatuated with a boy named Jazz. As for Jazz, he’s friendly and kind of shy, but Chance can’t figure out whether he’ll “desire a sexily feminine Chance, a boyishly charming Chance, or no Chance at all, because he isn't gay.”

Fetish Content: Actually, despite this being YA fiction, there is a bit of a cross-dressing fetish here. It’s not sexual or kinky, but I know some readers will enjoy Chance’s fashion sense, his love of lip gloss, and his experiments with eyeliner.

Literary Quality: This is a hard story to judge. Personally, I didn’t care for the narrative structure. To me, it was often a jumbled mix of styles, with a very teenaged narrator often talking directly to the reader, but it will probably work very well for its intended audience. The dialogue sounded realistic, if a bit exaggerated sometimes, but I’m really the wrong age to say whether the slang rings true (fortunately, there is a glossary at the back). There were some nice descriptive passages, however, and they do well to set the scene.

Spank Bank Rating: Not applicable here.

Overall: Love Spell was a story that has a lot of fun with the material, but which also has a strong heart and a wonderful message. Even if I got lost in some of the slang, the characters were well-developed and the mystery of the core romance was interesting enough to keep me reading right through to the end. He was exasperating at times, but I really did like Chance, and I sympathised with him as often as I emphasized. I hope it finds an audience because it’s a fun, uplifting, gender-affirming story that doesn’t come across as preachy or condescending, and that’s not easy.

Mike versus Michelle by Sharron Parsons

Mike versus Michelle by Sharron Parsons is a book that at times seems so far-fetched, one wonders if it could actually be based upon a true story or merely the figment of the mind of a good writer who is just only somewhat knowledgeable about the MTF transition process.  Breast augmentation at age 15? I wonder about this.  However, this novel also contains portions that carry such a ring of absolute truth, perhaps that's why I found it so intriguing.

It is a novel about Mike, a young crossdressing lad whose "en femme" proclivities are accidentally discovered by his mom. As it turns out, Mike's basic motivation for yearning to wear female attire is more a function of his fetishistic behavior than it is transsexually-based.  It won't give anything away to mention that this youngster also has a peck of emotional issues he is dealing with, not the least of which is an Oedipal-like attraction to his lovely mom.

Mike's motivation to crossdress while smoking Virginia Slims is purely to copy her for the sexual pleasure he derives from these activities.  The gender variant behavior is totally misconstrued by Mike’s mother. With her larger-than-life, enabling and probably narcissistic personality, she guides him down the "rabbit hole" where he makes life-changing decisions that are essentially self-destructive. Eventually, after several years of inner turmoil, Mike finally comes to terms with who he has become.

Though having to suspend disbelief a bit, I found this book to be both memorable and entertaining.

The Party Favor by Sara James

Gender-swap or gender-transformation fiction that’s more than just a quick bit of internet porn is often hard to come by (no pun intended). Most of the stories top out at around 20 pages, titillation usually wins out over things like plot or character development, and you can’t expect an exploration of any sort of serious themes. That’s why The Party Favor is such a pleasant surprise. Sara James really tells three overlapping, interlaced stories here, and they all contribute to a novella that’s really quite delightful. While they don’t overwhelm the story, themes of abuse, self-confidence, and female empowerment certainly help to elevate her work and make it both important and entertaining.

It all starts out with an extended, lovingly detailed story about a party game of gender-transformation involving a pair of magic rings. They look like wedding rings, and must be used accordingly – with a man wearing the plain gold band, and the woman wearing the diamond. Whatever couple happens to be wearing them has total control over their partner, allowing them to enhance, accentuate, or completely remake their physical appearance. Sara has a lot of fun with the concept, allowing multiple couples to have their fun, with their own unique motivations and hidden feelings inserting a little innocent fun or subconscious cruelty into the game.

As for those transformations, they’re as fluid as they are painless. It’s like having your body become soft clay or melted max, flowing and molding into new shapes. Some of the transformations are very sensual, some are wildly kinky, and others are just plain odd. It isn’t until Tom and Jane, platonic workplace friends, decide to give it a try that the story kicks into high gear. Just to see if it’s possible, to test the limits of the magic, Jane asks permission to remake Tom into a woman. He’s not at all sure about the idea, but likes her too much to refuse. By the time she’s done, Tom looks like a wet dream, a perfectly exaggerated woman of porn star proportions.

What follows from there is a story of mistaken identities, confused roles, and awkward encounters. Along the way, Sara does a superb job of exploring how much body image dictates our lives, how the need to be loved can blind us to the cruelties of abuse, and how it really is the mind and the heart that define a person. The Party Favor gets rather dark in parts, and goes down some unexpected avenues, but it’s all for a good reason  - and the happily-ever-after is just about as perfect as we could hope, even if it wasn’t what we expected.

SPOTLIGHT & GIVEAWAY: His Womanly Ways by K. Lynn

Author Name: K. Lynn
Book Name: His Womanly Ways

Release Date: May 27, 2015

Alex is a womanizer. He makes no excuses for it. Yes, he picks up women at the local bar, leaving them with just a memory of a good night and a good lay, but he hasn't had any complaints yet. That is, until he picks up the wrong woman. Not satisfied to be tossed aside as just another notch in Alex's bedpost, she curses him, wishing he “knew what it was like for a woman.” And he's about to find out what she means, embarking on a genderswap journey that he can't stop.

Alex starts slowly gaining secondary female characteristics. Waking up with his cock gone, replaced by a vagina, was bad enough. Then it gets worse, as his body becomes more like a woman than the man he used to be. Alex tries to hide the changes he's going through, for fear that someone will discover his secret, but keeping this quite literally “under wraps” might be impossible before the curse runs its course.

With the help of his female best friend, Eve, Alex tries to deal with who he is becoming.  He feels like he's lost his identity, his mind not matching the body he now has. But Eve sticks by him, and they become closer as Alex's changes progress. What started out as friendship may become something more before Alex's journey is over. Perhaps this curse was actually a blessing in disguise.

Excerpt:

“I don't need you to courier anybody, okay?” he growled. “This is more serious.”

She gave him a raised eyebrow. “I'm not helping you get rid of a body either. That was just a joke. You can't hold me to anything I say when I'm drunk.”

“Shut up, there's no dead body,” he said, untying the strings on the front of his sweatpants. “There's something wrong with me.”

“For fuck's sake, Alex, I don't want to see your diseased dick,” Eve said, covering her eyes. “Go to the clinic.”

“I don't think the clinic can help me with this,” he said, pulling his pants and underwear down and sitting on the edge of the bed in front of her. Alex pushed his legs apart, splaying them so there was no way she could miss the problem when she opened her eyes again.

“Eve, just look,” he urged, looking up at her.

“No!” she said, keeping her eyes fully covered.

“Please, Eve, I'm freaking out here and you're the only person I knew to call,” his tone was pleading now and he was starting to freak out again. “Just look at me.”

“I told you,” she began as she started taking her hand away from her face, “I don't want to see...what the hell is that?!” Her eyes widened as she saw him in full glory, her face losing all trace of color as she stumbled back.

“You should know, you've got one yourself,” he said with a pasted-on smirk, but his attempt at humor fell flat.

About the author:

K. Lynn has been an avid reader and writer since childhood. In her youth, she could most likely be found in the local library, devouring books that covered everything from WWII History to Dr. McCoy's latest adventures aboard the Enterprise, with some X-Men thrown in for good measure. Once she had read everything that was on the shelves, she turned around and read them again. K. Lynn was also known to create elaborate adventures that more than once made it to the page. Ink-filled papers gave way to overflowing computer memory as the years went on, but the stories never ceased.

While in college, K. Lynn increased her involvement in LGBT issues and writing within the LGBT fiction genre. She has become a long-time fan of the authors that seek to explore the commonality that exists within all sexualities and genders. Most of K. Lynn's work features LGBT characters, many of whom are in established relationships and show how love perseveres through every trial and tribulation that life holds. She also has a particular interest in seeing transgender characters gain a larger foothold within the LGBT fiction genre, hoping that the market for these works expand in the future.
