If you're new to The Dominion and the Sugilite, it's a serialized erotic science-fantasy soap opera by B.J. Frazier, set on a female-ruled planet where erotic power exchange underpins a fantasy-themed society fueled by the magic of gems known as sugilite.
Although I've been on top of my reading, I am behind in my reviews. So, with episode 40 coming up soon (the Season Four finale!), it's time to get caught up!
While the Pebbles cliffhanger is destined to be resolved in episode 38, we have to wait a bit because the story opens with a scene between Geo and Obadiah that angered and disgusted me in equal measure as the vile, portly Naturalist deliberately abuses the power exchange upon which Geo's health and sanity depends.
Fortunately, Frazier doesn't make us wait too long, because the resolution of Pebble's situation comes in the next scene, which both acknowledges how badly she's trespassed and begins orchestrating her redemption. That being said, redemption won't come easy, and the episode ends on a very angry cliffhanger with Acacia furious over the young woman taking advantage of her primary sub.
Frazier always does a wonderful job of building parallels and echoes into her narrative, but I think episode 39 is the first time I can recall her structuring an entire episode so deliberately. We open with the continuation of Geo's corrupted power exchange with Obadiah, and it's the culmination of everything we've come to expect of the old man. He clearly knows (and appreciates) more about the Dominion than he's let on, and it's now clear that his disdain for its ways is more about how he chooses to interpret them.
Things between Aurora and Acacia come to a head in this episode as well, and while the former is guilty of taking her frustrations out on the latter, that doesn't change the fact that her criticisms of Acacia are well-founded. The Dominion seems on shaky ground, especially with the events of Attis Day, and a lot of that keeps coming back to Acacia... and it doesn't help that Aurora overheard her last conversation with Geo and picked up on the tension.
Now, this episode isn't all doom and gloom. In fact, we get a wonderful erotic scene between Dayra and Neelam that illustrates how honest and powerful the romantic power exchange between women can be, no matter how the Dominion frowns upon it. Even Pebbles gets a reprieve from all the chaos and blame, and it warms my heart to see that it's Ailsa who is there to talk her through it.
While the cliffhanger this time isn't as jaw-dropping as some of the more recent ones, Frazier opens the door for another gut-punch of a twist as Naqqi prepares himself to help Geo with his issues. It feels significant, and I honestly can't imagine where it's leading, but I am anxious to see how this season comes to an end (and what answers it provides).
My sincere thanks to the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
