First Step is the first book in the She Came At The Glass Heel by Tatiana Vixen Reyes, a series that "celebrates trans women, authentic connection, and the transformative power of being truly seen."
This was an absolutely beautiful book, a dream-like read with a soft-focus romance that understands the thrill of coming out and the joy of finding yourself. Each page is like a soft caress that coaxes you in and welcomes you to stay.
Claire is a wonderful protagonist, and if you can't identify with her journey, then you'll certainly empathize with it - and if you can't do that, then I really don't want to know you. Reyes imbues her with personality, purpose, and passion, making her feel like more than just a character on the page. Elena is clearly a woman further along on her journey, but not so far that she doesn't share in the wonder of the moment. Their night together is one of friendship and romance in equal amounts, with the passion softly explicit. It's open-door romance, but the language is such that it never feels exploitative.
And then, of course, we have the mystery and allure of The Glass Heel itself, a nightclub that you can only find by invitation... invitations offered to those who need them most. I'm anxious to know more about it and its seductive hostess, and with three more books to enjoy, I'm sure we'll get to do just that.
