Protagonist Gender: Female
The Escort to Mossglade is one of those books I've had tagged to read 'soon' for... well, for far too long. The cover art is exquisite, the blurb exciting, and (for me) the allure of an intersex heroine irresistible. Technically, it's shelved as fantasy erotica, but the balance is such that I'll call it a spicy romantasy.
Renezuo Renezuo dumps a lot of world-building on the reader in the opening chapter, but it's intriguing. We have parallel worlds, a land in conflict, a vampire community, and one beautiful swordmage whose gender was seen as a 'curse' by her real family, but which is welcomed with open arms by her parallel family.
This first instalment of the Wanderlust saga sees Elaina Woodlock out in the world on her own for the first time, looking to be hired as a caravan guard to earn some coin. She falls in with a pair of beautiful women with secrets of their own, and by catching a pair of rogues spying on a moment of intimacy, she seals the deal, falling in lust (and perhaps even love) with her employers. There's genuine friendship and romance between the three, and as trust builds, so does their intimacy. Unfortunately, there's a rival group looking to stop the women and steal their cargo, not to mention storms, drakes, and magic to be survived.
The balance between fantasy and romance is pretty even, and both are beautifully developed. The fantasy has magic, mythology, and plenty of action, while the romance has magic of its own, as well as erotic pairings that are a ton of fun. I'll admit, I expected the ending to go in a different direction, but I'm not at all disappointed - in fact, I returned The Escort to Mossglade to KU and grabbed Shadows of Willowridge at the same time.
