Stacking The Shelves (Reading Reality) and The Sunday Post (Caffeinated Reviewer) are both blog memes about sharing the books we’re adding to the shelves and sharing news of the week ahead.
New Arrivals
A big batch of books arrived on my doorstep over the last two weeks, many of which were prompted by my AI recommendation experiment, with the remaining few coming from some Reddit conversations around gender diversity in SFF.
The AI recommendations...
- The Ritual by Adam Nevill was recommended by 4/6 AI models, and Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan was recommended by 4/6 models, making them both safe (I hope) bets.
- Black Mouth by Ronald Malfi was recommended for pure Stephen King energy; The Spite House by Johnny Compton was noted for Barker/Koontz-style dread with a strong hook; and The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman was presented as a feral, dark, violent vampire tale.
The Reddit recommendations...
- The High King's Golden Tongue by Megan Derr was talked about in terms of gender neutrality, gender fluidity, and choosing your own gender in a queer-normative world, featuring a male character who is very feminine with a fabulous wardrobe.
- The Kiss Murder by Mehmet Murat Somer features a gender-bending computer technician, drag queens, and transgender cabaret performers.
- The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry by C.M. Waggoner came up in conversations around non-binary representation, disguise, and gendered expectations.
Currently Reading
Speaking of the AI recommendation experiment, my first read to come out of it is Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill, and I'm loving it. Reading it reminds me of getting lost in Dragonlance or The Wheel of Time, and recapturing that feel is precisely what I'd tasked my AI agent with doing.
