If you're new to The Dominion and the Sugilite, it's a serialized erotic science-fantasy soap opera by B.J. Frazier, set on a female-ruled planet where erotic power exchange is the foundation of a fantasy-themed society fueled by the magic of gems known as sugilite.

Yes, it's been a while since my last review in the series, but my efforts to catch up have brought me to the end of season 3, so I'll apologize in advance for offering an overarching review of this part of the story arc.

In large part, these episodes are centered around plans for Attis Day, which have much of the Dominion in a tizzy. Aurora's idea of bringing together all the neighboring races and cultures in the spirit of cooperation is a wonderful idea, but there's a lot of racism, classism, and speciesism among Dominion females that leaves some humans feeling threatened or slighted. It's not necessarily cruel, more dismissive, but it's just one thing that casts a shadow over this utopian world.

That brings me to another key theme in these episodes that only adds to the shadow. Frazier explores two 'forbidden' relationships here, one of which involves secrecy and lies between two mature women who enjoy the power exchange together, and another of which involves the tease and temptation between two younger women who have been flirting with sapphic experimentation. It's not a matter of homophobia that casts the shadow here, but the idea of a woman taking a submissive role in the power exchange. It's hard to maintain a femdom gynarchy if not all women are dominant/superior.

Contrasted against all that, we see Aurora and Nug, her primary submissive, getting back to normal, having overcome their issues over the last season-and-a-half. What's important here is that we see the femdom dynamic at its purest, and with concern about Nug overindulging in submission again and upsetting the power exchange, we're reminded how intrinsic it is to Dominion society. There's a physical and emotional toll involved in the power exchange, and too much of a good thing is... well, too much of a good thing.

With Attis Day just 4 episodes away, things are getting heated in the Dominion, and I cannot wait to see how it turns out - and what the fallout may be.

My sincere thanks to the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
