Kelly's Night Out is a fun, sexy tale from Nikki Ruffles that subverts the 'caught crossdressing' trope, undermining the threat posed by a jealous ex-girlfriend to transform an act of revenge into one of liberation. It opens with a lovely crossdressing montage in which Kelly seeks solace and comfort in the act of dressing, taking us from shaving and doing her nails to wrapping herself in a corset and slipping into a dress. It's arousing, but that's secondary to the act of becoming Kelly.
There is, of course, a 'caught' moment on which the story pivots, but it's by friends who accept, support her, and insist upon dragging her out for a night of dancing and drinking. I loved how the story captured Kelly's anxiety, coming in waves that need to be soothed, rather than just being one massive crest that's triumphantly overcome. Aside from a little back-seat oral sex, the first few chapters are more about friendships than sex, and that's what makes what comes next not just exciting, but believable.
As much fun as drinks and dancing are, it's a chance encounter at the club that not only opens up the story, but opens up Kelly's sexual identity. Things get kinky in the second half, but it's not some cliched jump to sex with strangers - there's foreplay, discussion, and even a bit of negotiation. Kelly's threesome with Malcom and Elizabeth is fabulous, full of sensual details and erotic dialogue, and it completes that journey of liberation - complete with some wonderful morning-after wrap-up.
