I was hooked right from the opening scene, which invests more detail and atmosphere in a simple introduction than many stories do in far more pivotal events. Sorcha conveys so much detail in those few paragraphs, setting the scene and establishing a relationship that extends beyond the borders of the story.
The paranormal aspects are wonderfully strong, both on the witchcraft and the vampire sides, putting some interesting flourishes on magic and mythology without betraying what is familiar and beloved. Mara and Carmen are not just witch and vampire, however, they are strong women, well-rounded characters who draw us in and compel us to keep reading. The intersection of magic, sex, and feeding was surprisingly complex, and opens some interesting aspects of the story.
Erotically, this is wonderful as well, especially once the intimacy moves to Mara's well-furnished, dangerously-stocked dungeon. There is a great bit of BDSM erotica explored here, but Sorcha never lets us forget the dangers underlying the scene, inverting the power-exchange of predator and prey, while reminding us of the darker aspects of vampires and the lengths to which Mara has gone to protect herself.
If I were to have one complaint about Sating the Hunger, it would be that I wanted more . . . more of the story, more of the characters, and more of the erotic romance. Then again, there is something to be said for leaving the reader wanting more, especially when the story is so satisfying.
A private person who's happiest in the mountains, Sorcha enjoys telling stories about finding new love in strange and wonderful places.
