What sets true 'erotica' apart from mere 'spank-bank' fiction is the depth of characterization, and the amount of background behind the story. Hitting the reader's arousal button is easy, but engaging their sympathy/empathy is often a bit more difficult.
The first instalment of Dwindle Gee's Transvestite Hooker From Detroit hits that true 'erotica' nice perfectly. It has a sexy opening, with some great details, but then it starts slipping back to expose who Danielle really is, and how (as Daniel) they got into such a situation. After all, even if the sexual revolution was just gaining steam in 1965, it was hardly every man's dream to become a high-priced transvestite prostitute.
Aside from a few potential anachronisms (Danielle seems exceptionally high-priced for the era, and I'm not sure how many 60s housewives were into pegging), I loved the whole 'vintage' feel of the story, right from the attitudes, to the scenery, to the clothing. Danielle comes across as a classy, well-dressed prostitute, with just the right amount of attitude. I am curious to see where the story line goes next, and what happens if their wife ever finds out.
