"Waiting On" Wednesday - Sherlock Holmes: The Breath of God & Dark Tower Omnibus

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

Okay, so this week's picks are a bit of a cheat, since they actually came out yesterday, but if I'd known ahead of time, I most definitely would have been "Waiting On" . . .

Sherlock Holmes: The Breath of God by Guy Adams: The nineteenth century is about to draw to a close. In its place will come the twentieth, a century of change, a century of science, a century that will see the superstitions of the past swept away. There are some who are determined to see that never happens. A body is found crushed to death in the London snow. There are no footprints anywhere near it. It is almost as if the man was killed by the air itself. This is the first in a series of attacks that sees a handful of London’s most prominent occultists murdered. While pursuing the case, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson find themselves travelling to Scotland to meet with the one person they have been told can help: Aleister Crowley. As dark powers encircle them, Holmes’ rationalist beliefs begin to be questioned. The unbelievable and unholy are on their trail as they gather a group of the most accomplished occult minds in the country: Doctor John Silence, the so-called “Psychic Doctor”; supernatural investigator Thomas Carnacki; runic expert and demonologist, Julian Karswell. But will they be enough? As the century draws to a close it seems London is ready to fall and the infernal abyss is growing wide enough to swallow us all. A brand-new original novel, detailing a thrilling new case for the acclaimed detective Sherlock Holmes. [Sept 20, 2011]

Sherlock Holmes AND Aleister Crowley? Count me in . . . and it's not even Halloween yet!

Dark Tower Omnibus by Stephen King, Peter David, and Robin FurthThe ultimate Dark Tower collection! An oversized hardcover collecting the first five volumes of Marvel's Dark Tower series plus Dark Tower Companion, a separate volume of bonus material, both packaged in a deluxe slipcase! "The Man in Black fled across the desert...and the gunslinger followed." With those words from a short story published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Stephen King launched one of the most seminal characters in his lifetime of writing into a destiny fraught with danger, death, triumph and loss. In the almost thirty years since that momentous occasion, King introduced millions of readers to the densely textured realm of Mid-World through his magnum opus, the Dark Tower series of novels. King joined with Marvel in 2007 to bring his masterwork of fantasy to a new generation of readers. Adding stunning new textures to the mythos of Roland and Mid-World for four years, the initial arc of King and Marvel's union is now complete, and the entire run is collected here. Collecting DARK TOWER: THE GUNSLINGER BORN #1-7, THE LONG ROAD HOME #1-5, TREACHERY #1-6, SORCERER #1, THE FALL OF GILEAD #1-6 and THE BATTLE OF JERICHO HILL #1-5. Chock full of essential short stories, bonus material and apocrypha, the companion volume is a must-read for Stephen King enthusiasts. Three guidebooks overseen by Dark Tower: A Concordance author Robin Furth unlock the many secrets of Roland Deschain, the Gunslingers, Gilead and the dark forces of Farson - bringing readers greater insight into the people, places and things of Mid-World. And supplemental material from the first thirty issues of Marvel's Dark Tower series shed even more light on King's epic - with short stories by Furth, and a tour through artists Jae Lee and Richard Isanove's sketchbooks, and more!

It's no secret that I absolutely LOVE the Dark Tower saga, and from what I read of the first comic series, they've done a masterful job of expanding the story . . . all with Stephen King's approval and input.

How about you? What are you waiting on this week?

  1. I love Sherlock Holmes. I'm really fascinated with how he solves the cases.

Also, Stephen King is the KING!

    Thanks for stopping by. ^_^

  2. Love the resurgence of Sherlock Holmes with the BBC show and the Robert Downey Jr. movies. Seems appropriate to move on to the books too.

  3. I've been considering getting back into the Gunslinger comics, they've just started adapting Gunslinger itself. I collected the first arc (The Gunslinger Born) went it came out, and while I absolutely loved the first issue, once the focus turned toward adapting Wizard and Glass I started to dislike it. What can you drop when you condense a story? Why, the character of the woman, of course! I really disliked the way they portrayed Susan, the way she spoke and acted and especially the way she dressed. Maybe it got better when they got into "new material"?

  4. I have not read a Stephen Kink novel. Can you believe that?

  5. Thanks for your comment on my WoW! :) How funny we both did Stephen King books! For some reason I've never got around to reading The Dark Tower series, even though I've had the first one on my shelf for years now! Must get around to it at some point :)
