"Waiting On" Wednesday - Abarat: Absolute Midnight by Clive Barker

"Waiting On" Wednesday spotlights upcoming releases that everyone's excited about (created by Jill at Breaking The Spine.)

The one book I'm anxiously awaiting this week isn't the book I most desperately want from this author, but something to tide us over until his masterpiece is ready:

Abarat: Absolute MidnightAbarat: Absolute Midnight by Clive Barker: While there's no official 'blurb' yet, Clive has said the following: "The third book is called Absolute Midnight – which suggests it won’t be a happy book! But the idea is that we are aiming for something which is going to be apocalyptic, but it’s going to be a private apocalypse - it’s going to be played out on a grand scale but also played out on a very localised, very intimate scale...as the books progress, Candy assembles a circle of allies, uncovering a plot to blot out the Sun, Moon and Stars, and achieve a condition of permanent Midnight. Were this to happen, then a great number of creatures that would never dare to venture into the land in the light, would be free to emerge from the Sea of Izabella and would wreak havoc on the islands." [Release date: September 27, 2011]

I have to admit, I was underwhelmed when I began reading the first volume, Abarat, but only because I love Clive when he's at his darkest and most bizarre. It took me a few attempts to get into it, but once I settled into the story and accepted the boundaries of a YA fantasy, I found the same magic that delighted me with Thief of Always. I'm hoping to get my hand on a copy before September but, if not, I'll be waiting anxiously in line, just like everybody else. :)

How about you? What are you anxiously awaiting next week? Share your comments below, because there's no such thing as having too many books in your TBR pile!

  1. The Thief of Always was one of my absolute favorite Clive Barker novels. I haven't gotten the chance to tackle Abarat, but my brother is a huge fan. After such a long break, I'm glad to hear Mr. Barker is getting back into things.

    Great pick!

  2. "a private apocalypse"? Now, that's interesting. Usually we read about worldwide apocalypse and not about private apocalypse. Great choice!

  4. Oooh! I'm not usually into book trailers, but I really like this one! Clive artwork is always amazing, and that voiceover is perfect.
