A Past Life in New Orleans
By Louisa Bacio
My daughters believe in reincarnation. When a loved one passes away, they immediately discuss them “coming back.” In first grade, my oldest came home from school and said that one of her friends shared that when a person dies, you come back as your favorite animal. Me? Guess, I’ll be a meerkat.
It’s a different perception for someone who grew up within the Catholic tradition and the concept of Heaven. Still, I don’t “correct” them, or dissuade them from their beliefs. In many ways death, and the ways to comfort oneself, are extremely personal. We can try to help others, but still they need to work through it itself.
A few things within my life have pointed toward the validity of former lives. The first is a physical trait that I have: Tori? What, do you ask, are tori? They are dense bone material on the bottom of my mouth. My daughter used to say that I tried to eat some beans and they got stuck under my tongue. When my dentist saw them, he was quite taken aback, and he explained that most people get them when they are “older,” which means plain old.
I’ve had them all my life. Because of that I’ve joked that God forgot to take my tori away after a past life. Who knows if that’s true.
The other indication is my familiarity with New Orleans. The French Quarter feels welcoming, as if I belong there and have lived there. During last year’s GayRomLit Retreat, I led and people followed. Easily I traversed the streets, and knew exactly where I was at. While I tend to be good at directions, I don’t get this sense of belonging in every city. Chicago? Forget about it! San Francisco? Yeah, I feel instantly comfortable.
So one of the questions that I’m often asked with this series is if I’m from New Orleans. The simple answer is no. More complex, maybe another life.
The Vampire, The Witch & The Werewolf: A Threesome Wedding Adventure
Planning a wedding can be stressful and crazy-making. Planning three weddings at the same time? That’s insanity. While The Vampire, The Witch & The Werewolf embark on a nuptial excursion, Silver & Nick hold down the home fortress in New Orleans.
And as if everyone doesn’t have enough to deal with, the Voodoo King comes calling with a magic elixir that diminishes sexual inhibitions and an eerie quiet spreads across the French Quarter. Life as they know it may never be the same.
The threesome is forced to put off honeymoon bliss in order to banish the demons of their past, and embrace the uncertainty of the future.
