GUEST POST: Living in the Vampire World by Marie Treanor

Living in the Vampire World
by Marie Treanor

I don’t know about you, but I love losing myself in the world of vampires - in a literary sort of way, obviously. :)

As you may know, I’m celebrating the release this month of Blood Guilt! It’s the first of my new Blood Hunters series, which follows on from the Awakened by Blood trilogy published in 2010 and 2011. So I already had my vampire world more or less built, which should have made the writing a whole lot easier, shouldn’t it?

Well… no. :)

I discovered that writing a sequel series I wanted to stand alone presents its own problems, not least because of the very different viewpoints of my characters. In the Awakened by Blood trilogy (Blood on Silk, Blood Sin and Blood Eternal), my hero and heroine were both new to the world – Elizabeth because she’d never believed in vampires let alone come across one before, and Saloman because he had been, to all intents and purposes, asleep for 350 years! Therefore, the reader could discover the modern vampire world with them.

In Blood Guilt, my heroine, Mihaela, is an official vampire hunter who’s known all about vampires since they killed her family when she was a child. She’s been fighting vampires all her adult life and is something of an expert. My vampire hero, Maximilian, has been around for 600 years, and despite isolating himself for over a century, he knows how his world works.

As a writer, it’s very easy to slip so profoundly into your character’s viewpoint that you forget your reader doesn’t necessarily share it. She doesn’t necessarily know what Mihaela or Maximilian knows, especially if she hasn’t read the previous books! So my main difficulty was finding a way to explain things to the reader without making my characters think too much about them, because it just wouldn’t be natural for them to dwell on something was as familiar to them as breathing. (Or not breathing in Maximilian’s case).

On the other hand, it made everything fresh and new for me again to see things through such different eyes, to expand the world and the history and the tragedy of the hunters as part of the story. So I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed writing it, and I very much hope you enjoy reading it. :)

Anyway, for future reference, I’d love to know your views! How much information is too much? Do you like every detail to be explained for the sake of thoroughness, even if doesn’t directly relate to the story? Do you prefer a bit more subtlety or even mystery?

About the Book:

BLOOD GUILT
(Blood Hunters, Book 1)
By Marie Treanor
eBook coming 5th June 2012

The first of a new vampire romance series, a sequel to the Awakened by Blood trilogy.

Natural enemies, deadly attraction…

Mihaela, a fearless vampire hunter secretly haunted by loneliness and childhood tragedy, finds it difficult to adjust to the new world order where vampires are not always the bad guys. She's taking a much needed vacation in Scotland when she sees a little boy being chased through the streets of Edinburgh. Rescuing him brings bigger problems - two vampires from her past: Gavril, who killed her family; and the reclusive and troubled Maximilian, gifted Renaissance artist and one-time overlord of the most powerful undead community in the world. Maximilian once saved her life and now needs that favor returned.

The earth moves for Mihaela in more ways than one. From Scotland to Budapest and Malta, she  races against time to prevent a disastrous, vampire-induced earthquake and save an innocent yet powerful child – all while fighting a dreadful attraction to Maximilian, her only ally, whom she can’t afford to trust. For Maximilian, the hunter becomes a symbol of renewed existence, as he struggles to accept his past and rediscovers his appetite for blood and sex - and maybe even happiness.

  2. Thanks so much for stopping by, Marie. I loved your comment about slipping so profoundly into a character’s viewpoint - there's definitely a temptation to dump too much on the reader, but it sounds like you're on top of things. :)

  3. Oh, sounds very exciting! Even in writing any book it is difficult for me to forgot to only mention what the reader already knows... and not fill them in on things they havent yet discovered. But writing a sequel series...? I give you mad kudos!! I hadnt heard of your books before today, but I will be reading them in the future!! great luck with all your endeavors!
