Gender Identity & Expression Challenge 2011

Gender Identity & Expression Challenge 2011 hosted by Bibrary Bookslut

If you've already joined the challenge and are looking to link your reviews, please click HERE.

THE RULES:

1. Post about your participatioin in this challenge on your blog (of, if you don't have a blog, on Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
2. Grab the button above and display it in the post (and anywhere else you choose!).
3. Post a link to your completed reviews as you're done reading (this can be a link to your blog, Facebook, Twitter, or anywhere you post your reviews - i.e. Amazon, Goodreads, etc.).
4. The Challenge will run from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011.

To make it easy, and to encourage as many readers/bloggers as possible to participate, there will be 2 levels to the challenge:

BLUE LEVEL: Read one (1) book that deals positively with gender identity and expression.

PINK LEVEL: Read five (5) books, one (1) EACH  from ANY five (5) of the categories listed below that deals positively with gender identity and expression:

Biography/Memoir
Genre Fiction (Sci-fi, Fantasy, or Horror)
Young Adult (YA) Fiction
Romance
Erotica
Non-fiction
Anime/Manga/Graphic Novel

The definition of "Gender Identity & Expression" is intentionally a broad one. It can include MtF or FtM transsexuals; transvestites or cross-dressers; intersex or hermaphrodites; futanari or newhalf (crude terms, but common in erotica/manga); alternative gender models (including third genders and neuter genders); ambiguity or androgyny; or just gender role reveral. There are really no limits here, other than that there be something positive in how the subject is dealt with.

If you're stuck for reading suggestions, stop on by my Bibrary Index site (which can now be sorted by either genre or LGBT theme), or check out my Goodreads page and check out my bookshelves (alternate-gender, biography-memoir, transgender, young-adult) for some ideas.

To register for the challenge, please submit your Name/Blog Title and the URL of your Challenge Post in the Link below.

  2. This is an awesome idea for a challenge! I so want to take part, but have so many reading obligations... I'm going to go through all my books to see if any fit in!

Good luck with the challenge! I hope it does really well and that you can do it again.

  4. Oh, me, me! This is a great challenge and I want to participate! I'm too tired to post about it on my blog now (as you might notice from my rambling), but I promise to do so during this week.

It will probably be a challenge in itself to find from the public libraries of Finland books of different genres on genderqueerness/transgenderness (ok, not the best words, but you know what I mean), but I will do my best. If I have money in the summer, I might even be able to buy some books from Amazon. So I'll aim for the five books on five categories.

This is such a great addition to the LGBT-challenge I'm doing. By participating I'm making sure I won't read just lesbian books. :) Thanks for keeping a great challenge!

  10. Ugh, I'm sorry. Looks like I need some work on that whole reading thing. =P

The first time I linked, it was to my blog's main URL. I've re-submitted with a link to my Challenge Post. You have my permission to delete link number 8, since that was the one that was made in error. Sorry.

  12. Just linked my review to the challenge. I'm also publishing another review soon, will link that one is as well. Don't know if I can get up to Pink level, since I don't have much variety in the "gender genre" area, but now that the challenge is on, I might just have to.

    CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

  13. Ah, just realized you could include Graphic Novel among the genres, as I have read one of those - or is this considered Anime/Manga?

  14. Actually, Justin Hall will be stopping by later this month to do a guest post about the best comics and graphic novels with transgender themes. Considering his graphic novel, Glamazonia, is one of this year's Lambda Award finalists, I think he's unique suited to share some thoughts. :)

I'll make a quick edit and include Graphic Novels in the list.

  15. Question. Why is general literary fiction not listed as one of the categories for Pink Level? I just got done reading my first book, but I hadn't noticed that wasn't one of the options. Is there a reason?

  16. Just an oversight on my part, hon, and it's been recitfied. Thanks for the catch. :)

  19. Hi,

could you recommend some books for this challenge? I would need something that's either erotica, romance or magna/anime/graphic novel. And the deifficult part is that it would need to be something so well-know that I could find it in a Finnish public library. Any suggestions?

Also anything that could be read on the internet would be great. I'm just a little limited by my geografical position.

If you can help, I'll greatly appriciate it. :)

  20. Always happy to share a few recommendations. Not sure about a Finnish library, but these should all be available as e-books:

♥ Take Me There: Trans and Genderqueer Erotica by Tristan Taormino
♥ Future Histories: Transgendered Sci-Fi Erotica by Giselle Renarde
♥ Soft Focus by Reno MacLeod
♥ The Devil's Garden by Jane Kindred
♥ Silver: Humanotica Book 1 by Darcy Abriel
♥ PORN'S STARS BOOK II by Chris Burrows

  21. Thanks so much for the recommendations, Sally! I ended up buying Future Histories. I already read two stories of the three and I really enjoyed them. I didn't even know scifi-porn/erotica existed outside fanfiction, but it is great.
