NEWS: Banned Books Week starts tomorrow and runs to October 2nd

For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, it's an event designed to celebrate the freedom to read; to highlight the benefits of free and open access to information; and to draw attention to the harms of censorship. The books formally celebtrated during Banned Books are those that have been targets of bans or attempted bans in libraries and bookstores across North America. For complete details, please check out the ALA website.

The most recent list of banned books (which I always find to be a great introduction to new authors and works) can be found HERE.

If you're interested in events in your area, or bookstores that are promoting the event, I urge you to check out So far, the Sony Reader Store is the first I've found to be offering discounts on banned books (30% off), but I've noticed that Amazon has also put together a page featuring their banned book choices.

So, whether you're looking for something exciting to read, or just want to thumb your nose at those who feel they have the right to determine what you read, get your hands on a banned book today and start reading! Some great choices to get you started are:

His Dark Materials
Blood and Chocolate
Heather Has Two Mommies
The Sleeping Beauty Novels
Women On Top
Pillars of the Earth
Skeleton Crew
The Lesbian Kama Sutra
